I’m still in shock after reading about a Mississippi school that chose to cancel their prom rather than have it attended by a lesbian couple. My shock is so profound that it’s rendered me speechless.

A couple of questions spring to mind:

1. What is the school board afraid of? The girls’ safety? Don’t they attend this very same high school every day?

2. Aren’t all proms a bit of a “distraction to the educational process”?

3. Do Portland public schools have the same criteria for bringing a date to prom?

I have heard multiple examples from both of my teens about inappropriate (hetero) PDA at their high school that has left them feeling uncomfortable. And yet it persists.

So let’s just call this what it is then? Discrimination.

Note to self: the lesbian couple did not ruin prom for everyone else, as has been asserted. The school board ruined prom.
